Utamaro and Tochigi

Kitagawa Utamaro is one of the most famous Ukiyo-e artists from the Edo period, and one of his works “Female Dharma” or “Onna-Daruma-zu” was discovered in Tochigi City. Utamaro’s large-scale drawings “Fukagawa in the Snow”, “Shinagawa in the Moonlight”, and “Cherry Blossoms at Yoshiwara” are said to have been created upon request from a wealthy merchant in Tochigi.

When the song style “kyoka” became very popular in the Edo period, wealthy merchants in Tochigi also composed Kyoka enthusiastically. Utamaro also became very involved in Kyoka and had his own Kyoka poet name “Fude-no-Ayamaru”. As a result, he became close with those wealthy merchants. Those merchants contributed a lot to Utamaro’s art with regard to Kyoka style.
