Tochigi riverside of the Uzuma River

Thanks to the Uzuma River, which was a boat route to Edo, the ship transportation business flourished in Tochigi. Utamaro was active in the Edo period as well. Around that time, the eastern riverside was called Tochigi riverside. It is said that the establishment of the riverbank started in the early Edo period. There were ten wholesale stores which were crowded with customers in those times.
