Tochigi City, known as a city of Kura (storehouses), flourished as a post town on the Nikko Reiheishi Kaido Road during the Edo period. It also became one of the leading commercial cities in the northern Kanto region through trade with Edo by boat. Some buildings from this era still remain in the city.
The city is full of nature, history and culture. Some of the sights include the beauty of the four seasons at Mt. Ohira and the precious wetland of Watarase-yusuichi Retarding Basin.
