Former residence of “Kamai” or “Zenno Ihei "

Zenno Ihei was a wealthy merchant who owned a shop named “Kamai”. He ran his business efficiently, selling silk and linen clothing. This is the site of the house where he used to live.

He owned Utamaro’s large-scale drawings “Fukagawa in the Snow”, “Shinagawa in the Moonlight”, and “Cherry Blossoms at Yoshiwara.” In the Meiji period, these three drawings were carried from his house to Jogan-ji temple for an exhibition in the main hall.
