Omiwa Shrine has long been known as "Shimotsuke Soja Shrine". During the Heian period (794-1185), the chief of the national government enshrined all of the gods at the site of the Omiwa Shrine near the national government office so that he could worship the gods of Shimotsuke Province. "Muro no Yashima" (the small islands in the pond at the shrine grounds), with stone and vermilion painted bridges, is known as a famous Utamakura (a category of poetic words). There is a monument near by with a haiku poem written by Matsuo Basho (a famous poet of the Edo period).
